Śrī Jagannātha Mandir Tower, Purī (Present-day)

View of the colossal śikhara of the Jagannātha temple in Purī. From 1871 to 1875, Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura served as the British government-appointed deputy magistrate and temple overseer.

Historical Context

Tasked with regulating temple administration and curbing misconduct, Bhaktivinoda established punctual offerings, secured pilgrim safety, and used his daily free time to study sacred Sanskrit texts with the foremost panditas of Purī. At nearby Bhakti-kuṭīra, he later retired for deep bhajana.

Why This Matters

Witnesses Bhaktivinoda's remarkable executive capacity and his profound immersion in the confidential pastimes of Mahāprabhu in Śrīkṣetra.
