Godrumadvīpa
One of the nine islands of Navadvīpa, situated on the eastern bank of the Ganges, representing the devotional limb of kīrtana.
Why This Place Matters
The pastoral heartland of Nadia where the congregational preaching network of the Nāma-haṭṭa was revived and administered.
Historical Context & Significance
Godrumadvīpa is the island where the sacred wish-fulfilling cow Surabhi performed austerities to worship Śrī Gaurasundara. It embodies the mood of congregational chanting (kīrtana) and was the primary seat of Bhaktivinoda's preaching mission.
In Navadvīpa-dhāma-māhātmya, Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura revealed that Godrumadvīpa is non-different from Nandagrāma in Vraja. Here Lord Nityānanda opened the transcendental marketplace of the Holy Name (Śrī Nāma-haṭṭa), wandering from village to village distributing love of God without consideration of caste or qualification. Following in Nityānanda Prabhu's footsteps, Bhaktivinoda established his personal residence and organizational headquarters in Godruma, making it the epicenter of the 19th-century Gauḍīya revival.
Connection to Śrīla Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura
Base of operations for the revival of Lord Nityānanda's Nāma-haṭṭa; site of both Surabhi Kuñja and Svānanda-sukhada-kuñja.
Spiritual Significance in Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇavism
Corresponds to the limb of kīrtana among the nine processes of bhakti. Eternal abode of divine mercy through the Holy Name.
