Māyā and Conditioned Existence
Forgetfulness of Kṛṣṇa is the root cause of material conditioning, causing the soul to misidentify with inert matter and wander through repeated cycles of birth and death.
The Essential Teaching
Understanding the Teaching
Māyā acts upon the forgetful soul through two potencies: āvaraṇātmikā (covering the soul's real spiritual identity) and prakṣepātmikā (tossing the soul into bodily identification). The bewildered soul constructs subtle sheaths of ego, intelligence, and mind, followed by physical bodies of earth, water, fire, air, and ether.
Practical Reflection for Daily Life
When distress strikes, do not blame external circumstances. Recognize it as an invitation to awaken from material illusion and return your attention to Kṛṣṇa.
